Description
The global economy has changed dramatically during the last decades, especially after the pandemic. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has been played an important role in regional economic developments in both developed and developing countries, as a source of finance, technology and innovation, management, labor skills, and competition. However, abilities to both attract and to benefit from FDI vary a great deal depending on the host region since socioeconomic, institutional, and cultural factors both enable and constrain host regions in their efforts to attract and appropriate benefits from FDI. Moreover, FDI could decline sharply as a consequence of the pandemic and the resulting supply disruptions, demand contractions, and pessimistic outlook of economic actors. FDI can advance economic growth and help economic recovery through financial utilization, technological innovation networks, and talent migration, but the harmful distributional influence of FDI on the inequality of the economy has been criticized by divergence schools. Given this overview, this session will examine the contemporary trends in FDI and challenges facing the development prospects. Thus, I invite papers from the following overarching themes:
• Foreign direct investment and financialization
• FDI, institutions, and innovation
• FDI location and determinants
• FDI and international trade
• FDI and transnational ethnic network
• FDI, immigration, and talent
• FDI, environment, and sustainability
To present a paper in this session please email your presenter identification number (PIN), paper title, and abstract to hhuang48@iit.edu by January 1, 2021.
