Abstract
In July of 2020, Goya Foods CEO, Robert Unanue, expressed support for former President Donald Trump, igniting outrage across social media and a call for a boycott of Goya Foods products by many Latine public figures and individuals. However, the material impact of this boycott amongst the diverse populations of Latine communities throughout the United States remains unclear, and the roots of this outrage unexamined in a critical way. Our paper asks how Goya’s history as a major provider of Latine food products as a foundational pillar for Latine identity amongst many U.S. populations combined with the CEO’s comments to upset many Latines. This paper also asks how the online discourse surrounding the boycott and the months after can be interrogated to understand better the digital geographies of Latine identities and the mobilization of both major publications online discourse and social media to create public discussion throughout the United States. This paper uses qualitative data analysis of online publications surrounding the Goya Boycott from July 2020 – February 2021 to better capture themes of the discourse from this time, with a corpus of 209 articles. This paper will share the major themes of this discourse and patterns identifying Latine identity connections.
