Abstract
Eco and liveable cities have aroused great enthusiasm in global South countries as symbols of sustainable urban development. The ecological civilization initiative in China advocated the eco-philosophy that cities should realise the two-mountain theory: lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. Following this, within Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, recent years had witnessed a sharp increase in ecological water use within the category of urban water use. The study devotes investigating the source and use of the eco-water and its operational practice within cities in the urban region to restore the ecological capacity and water saving in urban design and planning. Existing infrastructure efforts from the geological, and water conservancy made the initiative's construction a high cost, high maintenance and highly fragile process. The study further noted the potentials of nature-based solutions in informing urban planning and design in informing the use of eco-water.
