Description:
Agricultural extensification and intensification have dramatically transformed the Earth’s surface. Today, about 40% of global ice-free land is devoted to the production of food, fuel, and fiber. In many regions, a focus on producing calories as cheaply as possible has meant that the true costs of food production have been externalized—whether through reduced nutritional content of food, environmental degradation, unethical labor practices, or the declining livelihoods of those who operate agricultural landscapes.
Meeting growing food, fuel, and fiber demand, while preserving ecosystem functioning, rural livelihoods, and ecological integrity in a rapidly changing climate, is one of the most significant challenges of our time. However, this significant challenge also provides a unique opportunity to intentionally support a transition towards more sustainable, resilient, and just agricultural systems.
