Abstract
Management of ecosystems is integral to nature-based solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation, reversing the decline in biodiversity, land-based livelihoods, and many other applications critical to society. As these issues become more integrated into markets and policies, a critical need is to accurately measure and monitor ecosystem health. Monitoring deforestation with remote sensing is now routine and integrated into the work of NGOs, governments, and research institutions. However, methods to measure more difficult-to-detect but equally relevant attributes of ecosystems are in their early stages of development. Focusing on study regions in India, the talk will explore the use of satellite imagery to assess forest degradation and bioacoustics to measure attributes of biodiversity.
