Description:
Accompanying spatial association and spatial heteroskedasticity, the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) is a fundamental issue and everyday challenge in spatial analytics and modeling. In a broader sense, the MAUP refers to the sensitivity or inconsistency of the analytical results when using spatially aggregated data. The problem roots in the subjectivity of partitioning the study area into finer analytical units due to technical, ethical and resource-related limitations and the fact that phenomena can be inherently aggregate therefore the traditional “individual” approach is infeasible. Though facing conceptual and analytical challenges, the growth and prosperity of new data sources and research paradigms fueled the contemporary research on this topic with new opportunities and epistemologies. As part of the Symposium on Scale in Spatial Analytics and Modeling, this session specifically calls for papers discussing the roles, impacts, and rationales of the MAUP from both theoretical and empirical perspectives.
