Description:
It is no secret that the effects of the ongoing anthropogenic climate crisis have had and continue to have a disproportionate effect on Indigenous communities and Indigenous landscapes. Whether it is through environmental change and degradation, or the steady erosion of Indigenous political and cultural rights/sovereignty, countless cultural, natural, and political resources that are important to Indigenous communities are placed perilously at risk.
However, the existence of consequences and implications does not mean that Indigenous communities and nations are helpless in the face of this burgeoning anthropogenic hellscape. As scholars such as Kyle Powys Whyte (2018) have pointed out, Indigenous nations have lived within apocalypses of a political and ecological nature since the advent of colonization. Even in the present day, Indigenous nations are finding creative and adaptive ways to adjust to their changing political and natural environments, mitigating anthropogenic change when they can, and learning to adapt to the changes that cannot be mitigated.
