Abstract
Counter-mapping empowers historically excluded groups to advocate for their rights by centering their own voices in the mapping process. Drawing from unique personal perspectives, these maps shape more holistic understandings of community needs, wants, and solutions. This mid-stage research project examines eight years of ongoing counter-mapping work with social studies students in grades 9-12 in which participants used ArcGIS Online and Survey123 to map access to vital resources in their community. At this point in the project, the research design needs to be finalized in order to collect reliable data about the impact of counter-mapping on students’ spatial thinking. Anticipated findings are that students think differently than adults when it comes to mapping and accessing resources in their communities. Over time, student-generated work has become a means for community engagement and of practical use to local stakeholders.
