Description:
Urban greening efforts are critical parts of the development of sustainable and equitable cities. Research continues to reveal the multifaceted benefits that a broad range of green spaces can deliver. Despite this, urban greening research is not well integrated with urban planning and design. This results in cities with uneven access to high-quality parks and green spaces that are often undervalued, overlooked, precariously funded and disconnected from other decisions about the city. This unevenness has been linked to a multitude of urban problems including gentrification, crime, and disparities in health outcomes.
This session seeks to explore the theoretical underpinnings and empirical evidence regarding the challenges, conflicts, and tensions that arise from treating green space as a panacea for urban ills, yet failing to provide adequate policy and funding support. We encourage abstracts that highlight case studies, particularly those in a non-global north context. While green space planning is relevant across scales and jurisdictions, these sessions focus on green spaces in an urban setting, thus, papers should have an urban focus.
Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
● Green gentrification
● Park design, development and funding
● Green space policy and governance
● Strategic green space planning
● Green space management and use, including issues of accessibility, equity and exclusion
These sessions will be presented virtually.
