Abstract
Nepal has gone through several social-political transitions since the first hydropower was built in the country in 1911. The current institutional arrangements for hydropower development represents dynamic evolution of institutions within the context on several domestic social-political transitions and international influences. This paper illustrates how evolution of water, energy and environment policies and practices have affected hydropower development in Nepal. It uses historical and comparative institutional analysis to provide insights into how social, economic, political, and environmental interests have shaped policies and practices for hydropower development in Nepal.
