Abstract
Active and applied pedagogies such as field trips, service-learning, and project-based learning (PBL) are cited by university students and in related literature as being some of the most impactful experiences. If done well, these active and applied pedagogies can enhance a student’s knowledge, learning, and meaning through direct experience, resulting in a deeper understanding of the material taught in the classroom. The ultimate goal of these pedagogies is to stimulate interest and motivation in a subject while enabling students to connect classroom learning with applications in the real-world to address complex issues. In light of the limitations of traditional knowledge-oriented passive learning for education for sustainable development, there is a current emphasis in the literature on learning by doing. This paper discusses the findings from a case study in which students in a sustainability-focused geography course were provided with experiences of real-world applications of sustainability concepts that transcended traditional classroom teaching and learning through hands-on active and applied learning based on field trips, PBL, and service-learning pedagogy, and assesses the process and outcomes of including these pedagogies in this course. Providing these innovative experiences has the potential to set students apart in the job market, equip them to be engaged citizens and leaders throughout their careers, and give them the tools to be relevant now and in the future.
