Abstract
In this paper I would like to ponder on the ways in which two locations – Lisbon, Portugal in the global north and Goa, India in the global south – resumed tourism at various points during the pandemic, and the implications of the same. My research considers the perspectives of young people as they participate in this contentious industry through employment in the same, questioning the way in which the economy is structured in both destinations. It simultaneously engages with the reactions to some decisions made by the respective governments reopening places with a focus on tourism.
In both places, it is evident that the focus on tourism resulted in a negative impact on young people – economically at the start, and additionally relating to health as the pandemic moved into its second year. Stories of working in tourism suggested a lack of other options or sectors of work, as it seemed the only prospect they had since other roles were either too few and thus competitive or rife with issues like nepotism. The decision-making process thus was fuelled by multiple concerns including desire for financial independence and autonomy and a reflection on work and leisure in society in a broader sense.
As these places resume tourism, and young people return to work in this industry, the paper raises the question of the intermediate concern raised by young people about a lack of options, of financial insecurity, and a re-evaluation of their relationship with work and place.
