Description:
This session will explore the use of satellite remote sensing data for addressing local community concerns, specifically those related to Environmental Justice. DEVELOP, part of NASA’s Applied Sciences’ Capacity Building Program, pursues rapid feasibility studies that apply the lens of Earth observations to environmental decision making and recently has initiated the addition of an Environmental Justice component to many projects. DEVELOP’s work relating to Environmental Justice is based on NASA’s goal that the use of NASA data, products, and personnel can and should inform the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all humans and communities and support the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, practices, and activities that affect human health and the environment. In recent years, DEVELOP initiated a series of projects partnering with non-profits and local municipalities to identify how satellite data can help inform their decision-making processes and discern spatial differences across cities for things like urban heat islands, tree canopy coverage, and flood and landslide risk. This session will highlight six DEVELOP projects that addressed environmental decision-making needs relating to these topics in the cities of Austin, TX; Yonkers, NY; Cincinnati, OH; Cambridge, MA; Sacramento, CA; and Fairfax, VA.
