Description:
While most would agree that climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, the debates around how to address it are far more varied. One of the major problems is that the very institutions that put forth solutions are often the same institutions whose power is dependent on continued contributions to the problem and perpetuating inequality (Barnett 2020; Erikson, Nightingale, and Eakin 2015). However, a growing body of literature in geography has focused on how we might look critically at key concepts in climate change such as ‘vulnerability’ (Barnett 2020; Erikson, Nightingale, and Eakin 2015), ‘adaptation’ (Aatteridge and Rremling 2018; Llindegaard 2018) and ‘mitigation’ (Sovacool 2021) to identify ways in which many efforts by large institutions perpetuate inequality and depoliticize their climate change solutions.
Presenters in this session provide critical analysis of different aspects of climate change and adaptation using case studies from the Global South.
