Abstract
While discussions of 'climate futures' typically include lots of bad news, they are often leavened with cheerful statements about regions that will not suffer as much as others. Many areas around the Great Lakes area, and Upstate New York, will fare well in the future, the story goes, because factors including favorable weather patterns, large endowments of fresh water, and low population pressures help blunt the impact of change. However, this narrative is incomplete and ultimately misleading. This paper explores several dimensions of the dynamics of the socioecological system in the region, and presents several reasons to modify theses prognostications,
