Abstract
This article sought to document the embodiment of water insecurity in coastal kampongs in North Semarang, Indonesia. Living with river and tidal flooding, land subsidence, and murky and brackish water in these coastal kampongs face severe household water insecurities. Using embodiment approach and emotional political ecology, we analyse embodiment of water through body stories, complex emotions, and their meanings to households' water insecurity on coastal residents’ everyday practices. Both approaches help us to better understand households water insecurity impact on their everyday lives and unjust water policies taking place in these kampongs.
We employ research methods from conducting survey to 319 households, in-depth interviews with (48) respondents, participatory visual making and a desktop analysis on online media.
Our research suggest four significant findings. First, embodiment of water and emotions unpacking unfavourable residents’ condition regarding their health and well-being. Second, they have developed cope mechanism as a way of living to embrace vulnerability facing multiple crises living in low socio-economic, living with sea level-rise, living by industrial area, living with land subsidence, and living with poor water quality. Third, instead of solution, the current solution for water insecurity suggested and funded by the World Bank; the community-based drinking water supply, its worsening land subsidence of its surroundings. Fourth, there is a need for the government to care, serve, and act for its citizen for legitimation-making. Legitimation-making on the household water insecurity is by subsidising and providing water piped infrastructure.
