Abstract
Research on human mobility (migration and displacement) and environmental change (including climate change) has increased sharply in the last decade, resulting in conceptual and methodological developments as well as substantial empirical results. This paper argues that these advancements are (at least partially) related to the improved availability of, access to, and integration of environmental, sociodemographic and migration data from different sources and formats, all of which has been instrumental in facilitating the evolving development of concepts and methods linking hazard, exposure, vulnerability and environmental migration. The paper starts by looking at the evolution of conceptual frameworks linking environmental hazards and migration, follow by the presentation of (selected) recent empirical results. It then turns to examine the role of data developments, particularly georeferenced data, in shaping the current state of the field, providing examples of the different types of data currently used. Finally, the paper briefly addresses some remaining (and persisting) data issues, including gaps.
