Description:
The context for geographic research has shifted from a data-scarce to a data-rich environment, with dramatic changes in the volume, variety and velocity at which we can capture geo-referenced real-time data flowing from sensors and people in the environment. However, there are major challenges is moving from these stored data to analysis, understanding and ultimately scientific and policy decisions. These bottlenecks and frictions reduce our ability to act on geospatial data as quickly as the world changes. There are also tensions between data-rich descriptions of specific places and times and the need for generalizable and transferable geographic knowledge.
This session will explore some of the bottlenecks, tensions and challenges in data-intensive geography.
