Abstract
Community based learning (CBL) has been identified as a high impact educational practice, which also presents a novel framework for expanding civic education alongside technical training. Supporting organizations, like Project Pericles and Campus Compact, provide mentorship, as well as financial and educational assistance for faculty and staff willing to extend their course reach outside traditional classroom boundaries. Foundational to these programs is an interest in pedagogy that addresses both core concepts and content in tandem with scaffolding that introduces learners to innovative approaches to wicked problems such as climate disruption, residential segregation and health inequities. This paper describes the importance of investing in CBL programming, for both institutions and faculty, ways that CBL work transforms contemporary transactional ways of learning, and one example of a GIS course design that brought students, faculty and community members together to co-create an Environmental Resource Inventory for their town, for the purpose of advocacy, education, and mutual aid.
