Description:
Scholars in economic geography have in recent years increasingly addressed challenges regarding the role of social relations by adopting relational perspectives, by applying methods of network analysis and by using and collecting new types of relational data. Mounting empirical research on the relations among actors and organizations, and the networks that they build between technologies and markets, communities and societies, and between places, cities, regions and countries offer ample evidence of how relational interdependencies between economic actors positively impact prosperity levels, expressed in terms of growth, competitiveness and innovation. The sharing of proprietary resources and knowledge, and the co-creation of new knowledge, services and products provide economic opportunities for the actors that are involved. The durable and/or temporary linkages that result from related interactions and collaborations are also a core part of economic success at different levels and scales, ranging from the individual to organizational, from the local to global, and from the community to society. Yet, when shifting our perspective across these levels challenges arise due to interdependencies that require conceptual and empirical consideration. In this session, conceptual, methodological and empirical papers are presented that seek to advance our understanding of relations, networks and interdependencies, aiming to build and apply new research designs to explore economic relations in a geographical perspective. Studies range from inter-personal and inter-organizational to inter-regional applications and their changes over time. Topics of interest include areas, such as innovation, development, trade, investment, production or global city networks.
