Description:
FinTech has taken the world by storm. While there has always been some degree of integration between finance and technology, recent innovations in artificial intelligence, blockchain, platforms and the internet of things have propelled FinTech to the heart of modern economic, social and political discourse. As FinTech continues to transform production, consumption and the norms of everyday life, debates have intensified concerning its virtues and vices.
Economic geographers have played a central role in adding clarity to these debates. Studies have contributed to clearer understandings of the different definitions and taxonomies of FinTech (Wójcik, 2021), its potential to rework global production and financial networks (Lai and Samers, 2020), the role of the state in its uneven formations (Hendrikse et al., 2020) and its impact on financial incumbents through processes of reintermediation, consolidation and capitalisation (Langley and Leyshon, 2020). While this research has been instrumental in identifying the actors, institutions and processes which underpin FinTech, key questions remain unanswered, particularly concerning its complex and uneven geographies. Where are the leading FinTech centres? Through which spaces are finance and technology converging? Which theoretical and conceptual frameworks are best suited to meaningfully analyse the geographies of FinTech?
This session explores these questions by zooming in on the emerging spaces of FinTech. Drawing from fresh empirical insights across a range of geographical contexts, the session seeks to develop a firmer understanding of where FinTech is, where it might be moving, and why.
