Description:
This virtual panel hopes to bring together activists and academics who have spent the last sixteen months struggling, strategizing, counter-mapping, and developing novel digital and analog tools in support of the broadbased fight for housing justice catalyzed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 was not the beginning of the current housing crisis, but its impact on renters and insecurely housed populations has spurred new local, national, and global movements for safe, affordable, and secure housing. While we are currently witnessing government agencies, property managers, and employers touting a return to pre-pandemic normalcy, the voices of those who refuse to be evicted or displaced grow louder. Activists and advocates have prevented evictions and fought against the displacement of encampments. Tenants, unhoused people, and allies have been responding to multiple crises simultaneously, building power where inadequate or absent eviction moratoria, mortgage forbearance, and emergency financial assistance programs have failed or prioritized landlords and lenders over precariously housed folks.
In this panel, we will come together to share our experiences, document our strategies, and learn from one another. We invite contributions that reflect the perspectives of tenants, homeless or housing insecure people, activists or scholars activists, movement data scientists and attorneys, housing advocates, and artists.
