Abstract
As the number of tourists who want to explore the ordinary life of destinations rises and the Information and Communication Technology spreads, the importance of the role of local people in local tourism is emerging. This study explores how local people are engaged with local tourism, by understanding the ways in which they select places to host tourists and reconfigure those as tourism attractions, and the characteristics found in the process. Qualitative methodologies such as in-depth interviews and participatory observations on local hosts of Airbnb Experiences were conducted and the results are outlined in the following. Places chosen by the hosts are the result of everyday practices, such as a place where everyday life and/or one's meaningful experiences take place, and simultaneously, have universal appeal as a tourism attraction. By the place-making process including (re)discovering, interpreting, and designing the place, local hosts reconstruct the selected place as an object of tourism. In this process, they experience a kind of tourism in which they discover newness in their everyday place. Interactions with guests while hosting can also change the way locals understand and use their everyday place. These local people are producers and consumers of local tourism, and make tourists experience local things, enhancing the trend of new urban tourism.
