Abstract
I will be discussing the influence of my father Allan Pred in my artwork and activism. From a young age, I experienced political discussions with my father at the dinner table and the everyday. Allan’s ideas inspired me to look at the world through a different lens. He also taught me how to take action and create change. In the seventh grade, I informed him about the girls in my school being forced to wear a uniform for P.E however, the boys were not required to wear a uniform. Allan wrote a letter to the Berkeley Unified School District on my behalf citing Title IX. Needless to say, the rule was changed and girls were no longer required to wear a uniform.
My artwork uncovers the cultural and political meaning behind everyday objects, with a concentration on feminist themes such as equal pay, reproductive rights, and personal security. My projects also contain social components that drive the conversation into public spaces. Examples include my exploration of the intersection of personal space and security by using airport-confiscated items after 9/11, the cultural background of the fight for reproductive rights, using thousands of expired birth control pills, and the continuing economic and political struggle for women’s rights, represented by her modified vintage handbag editions.
I will be presenting a video about the feminist art parades I have organized all over the United States and showing images of my artwork.
