Abstract
Even in a Black city, like Detroit, residents find little protection from the market or the linked ravages of dispossession. They come to feel alien in spaces they used to regularly occupy. Blackness stands in as a hope that they persistently find squashed in spite of their radical critique. Amidst Detroit's "comeback," via a collective project we began in 2014 called "Filming the Future of Detroit," this paper examines the efficacy of alternative visions for the city's future. In the end, it works to articulate the kind of politics critical Detroit residents find necessary for the contemporary moment.
