Abstract
The importance yet lack of fieldwork in landscape ecology education motivated this action research study to explore the potential of using dendrochronology field and lab activities to teach landscape ecology theory, specifically hierarchy theory. Undergraduate student experiences and perceptions of learning were evaluated over two separate offerings of the course (2019 and 2021) using multiple survey methods. Student survey instruments included written reflection cards and discussion responses collected through the course digital learning management system. Study findings report on the advantages and drawbacks of these methods as well as the overall attainment of intended learning objectives.
