Abstract
This study explored the effectiveness of a curriculum redesign on a World Geography course that included National Geographic Society (NGS) resources to help raise the low performance of elementary, pre-service Bilingual teachers on the EC-6 Core Subjects exam in Social Studies. As part of the certification process to become a bilingual certified teacher in Texas, candidates need to pass five different state exams focused on having knowledge in the content areas. Participants for this mixed-methods study were recruited by initially holding a meeting where all pre-service bilingual teachers in the Education program could attend (N=65). At the meeting they were presented with the explanation of the grant, which involved being in a special section of the GEO course, attendance to workshop sessions, and given a preview of the national geographic resources. A total of 21 students ended up participating in the grant activities. In reviewing the initial survey given to participants, 85% noted not feeling prepared to teach the content area of Social Studies. In reviewing their tests, the average pre-test score was 6.14 out of 10, the post-test score was 8.87 out of 10. In addition to the summer course, students participated in a couple of two-week workshops to assist them in preparing for the EC-6 exam. The workshops heavily used NGS online resources, including the resource library. Over all, the results showed marked improvement and readiness to take the EC-6 Core Subject exam.
