Abstract
This essay aims to address the importance of developing materials for the ongoing training of teachers within their respective pedagogical practices; such as the production of decolonial, anti-racist curricula and support materials; fundamental pedagogical instruments for the production of non-discriminatory, plural education; one that particularly combats the reproduction of racism and gender inequality in day-to-day school life.
In 2003, the passing of law 10.639/03 made the study of Afro-Brazilian history and culture mandatory in Brazilian educational institutions. This article reflects on developments in the teaching of Geography from an Afrocentric perspective in the teacher training at the SME (Municipal Secretariat of Education) in the city of São Paulo, Latin America’s largest metropolis, noting cutbacks on the ongoing training of teachers from the DRE /CL (Regional Board of Education of Campo Limpo) beginning in 2013, 10 years after the passing of law 10.639/03.
Drawing on data from the Open Data Portal of the City of São Paulo, the study introduces and analyzes the ethnic-racial, gender, and socio-economic profiles of teachers from the DRE/CL school community, then turns to consider the experiences of continuing education of teachers, with a focus on law 10.639/03 in teaching Geography with educational concern for ethnic-racial relations. Grounded in perspectives from my personal experience as a teacher in primary education, the study emphasizes didactic and support materials for the municipal curriculum (guides, curriculum guidelines), as well as pedagogical materials and didactic sequences used in teacher training.
