Description:
Interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasing rapidly in the field of geography. Geographic Information Scientists have designed GeoAI algorithms and applied various neural networks to geospatial problems, reporting on them in special journal issues (e.g., International Journal of Geographic Information Science) and at workshops and conferences (Association of Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group-Spatial). A small amount of concern is emerging within human geography on the societal and ethical concerns of GeoAI, building on a substantive field outside geography that interrogates AI ethics and Responsible AI. Up until now these two groups, the GeoAI developers and the critics, do not meaningfully interact. Our panel brings together leading proponents of GeoAI with the critics of GeoAI. A diverse group will talk about what makes spatial special in GeoAI, including geospatial knowledge graphs, Generative Adversarial Networks and opacities of GeoAI, differential geospatial concentrations of AI wealth, aesthetics and (mis) representations in GeoAI, and linkages of locations to personal privacy. We hope to discuss possible characteristics of a responsible GeoAI and lessons from geoethics to answer the question Is AI good for geography?
