Abstract
The article presents the path of geography teaching in the monarchical context in Bahia, Brazil. To do so, we will first understand the formation of the educational system in Brazil, especially in the city of Salvador. Born as the colonial capital, it was home to important reforms in the educational system in this period. They were caused by the close relationship between the religious powers (Jesuits, Franciscans, Benedictines, among others) and the Portuguese rulers, whose intertwining presented alliances and conflicts. The church led the scientific thinking of the time through the most diverse strands, especially the Jesuit pedagogical model. In a different way, it introduced the knowledge from the Old World to the native peoples, enslaved blacks and whites in production in the Brazilian territory context. Thus, we have bibliographies, photographic and manuscript archives as sources. This brief discussion contributes to the understanding of the developments that led to a relatively late university institutionalization in the state of Bahia, compared to the rest of the country. We understand that the return to this historiographic period brings a relevant debate about the course of the geographic thought in Brazil, which is in connection with the worldwide epistemological movement, since the exchange of Bahia's population to study in European educational institutions, for example, the ones carried out with the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in the nineteenth century.
