Abstract
The lockdown and social distancing measures implemented to contain the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted established ways of learning, teaching, and research (LTR) in universities in New York City and the world over. Growing access to mobile internet and portable devices has been facilitating online and flexible learning, teaching, and research practices for some time now. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the adoption of remote and hybrid LTR practices even further. This paper argues that the post-pandemic transition is an opportunity to reimagine traditional campus-based learning, teaching, and research practices. It addresses the question, "how is campus-based LTR evolving in the post-pandemic New York City?" through interviews with New York City-based campus planners, administrators, designers, consultants, and researchers, who play varied roles of gatekeepers, managers, decision makers, custodians, curators, knowledge-bearers, and active change agents in campus planning and administration. Campuses have traditionally been an essential resource for conducting learning, teaching, research activities. This paper will present findings such as, discipline-specific changes in campus-based LTR practices and policy recommendations for supporting faculty members, students, and researchers in the conduct of learning, teaching, and research in post-pandemic New York City and similar urban settings.
