Abstract
Studying the soundscapes of Rock and Roll music, particularly that of The Grateful Dead, offers an insight into the relationship, role, and purpose music plays in geography. How is music able to represent and influence significant events, places, and cultures throughout history? Amid a time of revolution in the United States in the 1960s, the Grateful Dead helped shape and evolve the power of rock and roll music on geography (Morrison, 2000). This research delves into how the power of sound can symbolize or leave a powerful imprint in listeners' minds and how this contributes to self-identity, community, and our perception of place. (Von Glahn, 2003).
This paper will explore the impact and influence of The Grateful Dead’s music in the geography of music and soundscapes from 1965-1995. This study of the Grateful Dead in the geography of music offers a way to analyze the history of music’s roots in the geographical landscape, the cultural impact music holds within its created and imagined communities, and the affect it has had through time and space. To examine the affective capacity of the Grateful Dead’s music and concerts on their listeners, I analyzed concert locations from 1965-1995 using Concert Archives. The data and methods utilized in this study were analyzed with qualitative and quantitative techniques. This work focuses on sound maps as a way to explore music's role in creating real and imagined places for Grateful Dead concert attendees. The sound maps display the connectivity of place, landscape, and music through GIS.
