Abstract
More than 90 chapters of the World Affairs Councils of America are located across the US with a goal of “expanding informed, respectful public discourse about international relations and current events.” In efforts to expand an informed citizenry conversant in foreign policy, individual chapters have launched initiatives devoted to hosting lectures delivered by diplomats, university professors, and respected journalists. Considered the largest discussion program on world affairs is the Great Decisions Lecture Series, which addresses the eight most critical global issues, determined by the Foreign Policy Association, that face America each year. In an arena traditionally dominated by political scientists and corporate executives, here is an opportunity for our discipline to demonstrate the vital role geographers play in analyzing global problems and offering prospective solutions. In bringing stellar geographers to forums on global issues, the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan and Grand Rapids Community College have partnered to introduce to students, faculty, college leaders, and members of the local community the significance of the geographic discipline and the exemplary research carried out by its practitioners. It may be prudent for geography departments in the US to consider initiating relationships with local World Affairs Council chapters to enhance the visibility of the discipline and expand the community of geography.
