Abstract
Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGSs) are commonly used at small map scales to represent continuous data. The impossibility of creating congruent faces in three-dimensional space for objects beyond the Platonic solids has relegated DGGSs to niche applications with significant competition for use with equal area grid systems. The creation of a wide array of DGGSs has also prevented the adoption of a singular or a few DGGSs for broad use. A major advantage of DGGSs, which is undervalued due to their narrow applications thus far, is their scalability which enables the use of DGGSs at large map scales. This paper explores how DGGSs can be used at large map scales as standard spatial structures for data alignment.
