Abstract
Everywhere She Maps is an initiative to develop the adaptive mode of mapping and data collection led by women and nonbinary emerging student leaders in the YouthMappers network. This paper shifts the approach from treating women as vulnerable human beings during emergencies and disaster situations to empowering women and girls' lives by involving them in mapping and geospatial data activities. The paper focuses on the perspective of women in GIS and the benefits of making mapping data available to half the world's population through OpenStreetMap.Geographic dimension When women are involved, consulted for, and lead open mapping projects, security improves, lives are saved, power is generated, prosperity rises, and innovation happens. This paper aims to shed light in particular on how lives can be saved using mapping technologies to teach women to navigate hazards and natural disasters. This discussion establishes the foundation for radically new and reimagined approaches to questions about how women navigate shelters during natural disasters like floods and cyclones to support themselves and their communities. The analysis engages with a conceptual framework that aligns with awareness of shelter locations, transportation access, and communication strategies in advance. I argue for an inclusive use of the mapping tools approach through the Everywhere She Maps initiative that addresses the opportunities and challenges for reimagining women in GIS through various mobility behaviors and communication networks in vulnerable households.
