Abstract
Prior studies of hate crimes against a certain group of people have focused on crime incidents, victims, and/or offenders with a quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods approach. Some researchers implemented spatial statistics to analyze hate crimes, including spatial relationships between crime incident locations and hate group locations and spatial concentration of hate crimes over time. Other researchers analyzed experiences and perspectives of hate crime offenders or victims through interviews, focus groups, art-based methods, and/or participatory mapping. Since the number of anti-Asian hate crime incidents have been increased because of the COVID-19 pandemic, several studies reported Asians’ racial discrimination and attack experiences through surveys and the incidents’ patterns. In this presentation, we will introduce various approaches of analyzing hate crimes and useful methods of analyzing anti-Asian hate crimes through a geographical lens.
