Abstract
The growing awareness of plastic pollution had placed Canada on a path towards regulating single-use plastics and increasing the use of reusable products in the retail sector. The COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainties of surface transmission risks reversed this trajectory. This research examines the framing of single-use plastics and reusable alternatives in the coverage of Canadian newspapers (Globe and Mail and National Post) and digital media outlets (CBC News and CTV News) during the COVID-19 pandemic with the following research questions: (1) How are single-use products and reusables framed by the Canadian media during the COVID-19 pandemic? (1a) How did this framing change over the course of the pandemic? (2) Which stakeholder groups (e.g., industry, public health experts, NGOs, the public) were consulted in the coverage?
