Abstract
Census products contain residential unit distribution available for limited years and geographic scales, with the finest block-level data delivered every 10 years. These data combined with Housing Unit Survey results allow the Demographic Research Unit (DRU) in the California Department of Finance to produce highly accurate sub-county estimates. However, the scale of estimation is too coarse to identify parcel-level housing unit change between decennial census years. Annual permits and completed construction information are available from the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), which offer highly detailed locations of construction and demolition. This poster highlights how HCD data can be leveraged to enrich sub-county estimates of housing unit change.
