Abstract
This chapter presents a review of the achievements, opportunities and challenges of applying new and emerging big data in travel behavior studies. First, we review the sources and attributes of these new data, including smart card data, mobile phone data, vehicle trajectory data, geotagged social media data, and road sensor data. For each category of these data, we illustrate how they have been applied to the investigation of various dimensions of travel behaviour and what progress has been achieved to date. Further, we present how the applications of these new data have advanced travel behaviour research by uncovering more mobility patterns, enhancing understanding of mobility dynamics, and developing new methodologies. Lastly, we propose several future prospects of applying these new data as well as the challenges that need to be dealt with in future research.
