Abstract
Not all menstruating individuals have access to readily available menstrual hygiene products. Individuals who do not have access to period products resort to using alternatives which risks their reproductive health. Period poverty is defined as the inadequate access to affordable menstrual hygiene products, clean washing facilities, running water, and waste management. Period poverty has widely been associated as an issue in developing countries, but recent studies show its existence in developed countries like the United States.
This study investigates the existence of period poverty in the San Fernando Valley (SFV). More specifically, measuring access to period products and exploring the relationship between access to period products, income, and population. Furthermore, data was recorded on student experiences managing their menstrual cycle on and off campus, the relevant health education they received, and their attitudes toward their menstrual cycles. Finally, a land survey to record data regarding the type of products sold, price ranges of products, and variability of products will be recorded from select establishments. The data was analyzed using a mixed method approach utilizing point pattern analysis, content and thematic analysis, and comparative analysis.
The objective of this analysis was to study patterns in the locations of commercial establishments presumed to sell period products and the products they offer consumers to measure the accessibility of menstrual hygiene products as well as to establish a deeper understanding of the needs of menstruating students and persons in the SFV.
