Description:
While scholars have long worked towards understanding the relationship between hazards, vulnerability, and capitalism (e.g. O’Keefe, Westgate, and Wisner 1976), more recent scholarship has worked to center and expose the state's role in the reproduction of disaster and precarity, especially focusing on how disasters are racialized and gendered (Bonilla 2020, Gilmore 2007, Moulton and Machado 2019; Montano 2021). Additionally, there is a growing interest in the datafication and calculations of risk and vulnerability in the context of socio-environmental hazards and disasters as well as their visualization (Jefferson 2018; Lucchesi 2019; Rosenfeld et al. 2018; Walker et al. 2018). At AAG, we aim to encourage deeper conversation and connection between geographers from a variety of sub-disciplines who are concerned with the intersections between disasters, risk, and inequality. We seek to bridge and blur research areas, topics, and approaches that are too often siloed within the academy and in practice.We welcome critical approaches that could include (but are not limited to) intersectional, anti-racist feminisms; Black geographies; disability justice; LGBTQ+ experiences; Indigenous perspectives; critical digital geographies; embodied experiences.
