Description:
In the wake of George Floyd and the global pandemic , professional and college sports organizations have begun to have more conversations on race, racism, and structural inequality in relation to Black athletes and other marginalized groups. This panel will feature studies and papers focused on the use of critical geographies, including Black and feminist geographies, to explain how the experiences of Black athletes are shaped by space and place. This panel has been formed by former athletes who have used their knowledge and experience to situate their understanding of the intersections of sport and race. These conversations will discuss how place and space are locations where identities and oppression intersect and overlap creating and embedding in the complex experience for Black athletes. As Lawerence Berg expounds “ critical geographers need to take geography seriously, by using their own critical geographical theories to better understand the socio-spatial relations within which they are important players” which includes fans, athletes, and coaches embedded in sporting cultures ( Berg, 2004, p.554) For example, Black geographies as a framework can be used by researchers to be able to incorporate different forms of knowledge and to highlight the unique experiences of Black people in shaping spatial visions and practices (Allen et al., 2019). Black athletes are constantly moving through place and space internationally in places that unknowingly or subconsciously have “particular sets of rules we intend to govern society, seeking to establish what and/or who is inappropriate or ‘out of place’ within particular spaces” (Allen, Lawhon, & Pierce, 2019, p. 1010).
