Abstract
During the past four decades, one major consequence of the great urban transformation in China is the dramatic increase in the migrant population. However, compared to earlier times, recent studies have much paid less attention to the interplay between gender and migration. Against this backdrop, this paper aims 1) to identify new trends in gendered migration in China; 2) to investigate the social consequences of migration from a gender perspective. The empirical analysis is based on data from the 1% population sample survey in 2015. The results indicate that, while men remained more mobile, women have participated more in economic migration than before. Female migrants also have higher educational qualification and better occupations, but the glass ceiling on women still intact. Importantly, it is found that, the gender gap was relatively narrowest within the migrant population. In this sense, from a gender perspective, migration is indeed one driving force of China’s social transition.
