Description:
With rapid advances of location-aware technologies (e.g., Global Positioning System (GPS) trackers) and smart sensors (e.g., potable environmental sensors and wearable health devices), we now have ever-increasing access to a wealth of geo-referenced high-resolution monitoring data of human and natural systems. These mobile sensing data of individuals promise new opportunities and insights into the research on human movement and environmental health. The unprecedented data revolution also calls for novel spatiotemporal analysis methodologies to explore new forms of knowledge underlying the continuous dynamic process of human mobility and natural environment involving space, time, and context. In addition, to best exploit the ability of real-time multimodal data of moving individuals, it necessitates an integrated research paradigm to better understand the complex interactions and potential causality among human activities, environmental exposure, and health behaviors. These mobile sensing data and advanced spatiotemporal analysis technologies can further help mitigate major methodological issues, such as the uncertain geographic context problem and the neighborhood effect averaging problem, in past studies on environmental Health.
