Abstract
Although previous studies in general observed that community environments play a pivotal role in affecting people’s physical, mental and social wellbeing, many issues still need to be investigated. For example, the findings about the relationship between perceived community environments and peoples’ health from previous studies were inconsistent. Moreover, most previous studies were conducted in Western countries or developed Asian cities. Thus, little is known in Mainland China, especially the mediating effect of physical activity on the relationship between perceived community environments and people’s health. To address these limitations, we use data from the China Family Panel Studies to examine such mediating effect based on an ecological framework. Multilevel structural equation models (MSEMs) are then employed to analyse the direct effects of perceived community environments and the indirect effects through physical activity on health. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) is also applied to analyse the geographic heterogeneity of the direct and indirect effects of perceived community environments on people’s health.
