Description:
This is a 2 session panel, Part 1 and 2. This is Part 1. Our current historical moment is, as Allan Pred would have argued, a “moment of danger” in which human dignity, freedom, and trust in science, are being distorted and undermined. Through a return to Pred’s rich work, this panel examines the intersections of power, place, history and memory, situated ignorance, racial structures, and the collective amnesia that allows the “taken-for-granted” to go unnamed, unexamined, and to be reproduced. The premise of this two-session panel is that Allan Pred’s attention to the histories, geographies, biographies, gender norms, invisibilized and silenced racist systems, and the situatedness of everyday life are especially helpful in understanding what is at stake in our current condition. Drawing on art and performance as well as words, we examine the hauntings and collective failures to excavate that which has been silenced and erased. Unearthing and illuminating these brute facts is a collaborative project, one that we engage in side by side. The past may be buried, but it is not dead.
