Description:
Over the last decade, conversations around Black Geographies have increasingly gained traction in Anglophone Geography circles. From keynote lectures at the Royal Geographical Society Annual Conference, to special topics at the American Association of Geographers Annual Conference, to a plethora of academic articles, journal special issues, books, and colloquia presentations, Anglophone geographers have started to take note of how Blackness informs the spatial relations that comprise our world. The commitment to understanding how Blackness and space co-constitute one another, however, is not something exclusive to the Anglophone world. Indeed, the spatial experiences of Afro-descendant populations, and the creation of spaces of black life within and against racialized geographies, have been at the core of multiple traditions of spatial thought in a variety of national contexts..
This session seeks to broaden the conversation on Black Geographies by exploring how theoretical and methodological approaches around Blackness and space occur in Latin-American and Caribbean contexts.
Ultimately, we wish to strengthen hemispheric dialogues around black geographies, based not only on the recognition of diverse diasporic experiences, but on multi-directional engagements with traditions of spatial thought emerging from different places and traditions throughout the americas.
